It is a portrait inspired by examples from the Roman era. For the Romans, the center of interest in portraiture was the head rather than the body, which was often idealized. The preference for the bust was therefore a typical Roman cultural trait, based on the conviction that it allowed for better individual identification. The man depicted here wears a toga, the official attire of high-ranking officials of the Roman Empire, from senator to consul to political magistrate, to the wealthy in general. It was mandatory for the emperor. Generally made of wool, it was a single piece of semicircular fabric, which was worn by first creating a bunch of folds that had to be placed on the left shoulder; it was then passed around the body and repinned on the right shoulder. Being wide and heavy, the toga gave an imposing appearance to the wearer and well represented the importance of Rome, the ruler of the ancient world. The bust is a fine example of 17th-century decorative sculpture. Since the beginning of the Renaissance, the effigies of Roman emperors were revived as examples of earthly power, civic commitment, and devotion to politics and the common good. The sculpture rests on a base made of green Alpi marble, considered of great aesthetic value, refined, and elegant.
