This Russian icon was made in the 19th century using the egg tempera technique on a mecca silver background.
It depicts Saint Pantaleon (Panteleimon) in the center and four family saints on the edge.
Pantaleon was born in the second half of the 3rd century in Nicomedia, in modern-day Turkey. He became a doctor and was persecuted by the Emperor of Constantinople Galerius for his adherence to the Christian faith. He was sentenced to death in 305. He is the patron saint of doctors (together with Saints Cosmas and Damian) and midwives. He is considered one of the fourteen Holy Helpers. He enjoyed a vast cult in the East and West from ancient times.
The icon is accompanied by an expertise by Pietro Belletti of Imago Lignea.
