Black lacquered wooden chest of drawers, Veneto, 17th century Measurements: top cm W 146 x D 65.5 x H 94; maximum width at bracket foot 151 cm Price: private negotiation Object accompanied by our certificate of authenticity This important chest of drawers was made in the Veneto region in the 17th century. The wooden structure is carved and lacquered in black, with lacquered decorations simulating wood inlay. The piece of furniture, of considerable scenic presence and equipped with three large drawers, features a front with a rigorous architectural layout, enlivened by the richness of the carving and the elegance of the painted decoration. The frieze beneath the top is applied and carved with a geometric decoration composed of semicircular elements. The perimeter of the drawers is adorned with carved reserves with a guilloché motif. The same motif is found on the sides of the piece, framing a recessed area. This decoration creates a play of light and shadow that enlivens the surfaces and the decoration. The front of the drawers is adorned with vegetal motifs painted in light lacquer within frames delineated by thin fillets, executed to simulate precious wood inlay. The contrast between the black background and the ornamentation gives the facade a particular effect of refinement. The three pairs of original chased bronze handles complete the design of the front. The chest of drawers rests on bracket feet, which are carved at the front with vigorous volutes and phytomorphic elements. Of great decorative power, it can be easily placed both as a statement piece in a historic interior and, thanks to its severe architecture and dark chromatic tones, as a focal point in a contemporary setting, suitable for bedrooms, studies, or living rooms.
