Pair of Baroque walnut wood sculptures, Veneto, late 17th century Measurements: H 104 X W 60 X D 30 cm Price: confidential negotiation Item accompanied by our certificate of authenticity The pair of sculptures was made in the Veneto area towards the end of the 17th century, in walnut wood, and depict two angels. The two figures, presented en bois naturelle, have an asexual physiognomy, characteristic of angels, spiritual beings, creatures of God capable of appearing in human form. The long, wavy hair rests on their bare shoulders. They are enveloped in a robe that rests softly on their arms and body, creating lively drapery. Slightly specular, they hold up a drape with their raised arm that falls lightly, as if puffed up with air, onto the other arm. The figures, who turn their gaze towards the hand placed below, have their weight shifted onto one leg, while the other knee is slightly bent: a dynamic and slightly kneeling posture, but graceful and elegant, reminiscent of a dance and giving movement to the two celestial creatures. Of great decorative effect and good carving quality, they can be displayed in various environments, resulting in a very scenographic effect in a slightly raised position, above bases, or above consoles and chests of drawers. They can be placed in pairs or individually, even in the center of spaces, as the three-dimensionality and dynamism of the figures makes them usable even from points of view secondary to the frontal one. The sculptures rest on wooden bases, finished with golden paint. Over time, the wings were removed. Some small flaws are noted.
