Pair of neoclassical benches, Naples, late 18th century Dimensions: cm W 64 x D 48 x H 50 Price: confidential negotiation Object accompanied by our certificate of authenticity This pair of center benches was made in Naples towards the end of the 18th century, during the neoclassical period. The rectangular seat is lined in blue velvet fabric in good condition. The structure is made of lacquered and Mecca gilded wood, carved on all four sides. The lacquer still has an excellent authentic patina. The band under the seat, bordered by a gilded thread and lacquered in shades of cream, has in the center, in relief, a gilded phytomorphic ornament centered by a flower. The same flower, within a square frame, is carved near the corners, from which the four legs originate. These, from a concave sculpted element, which gives grace, develop as a truncated inverted pyramid. Bordered on the corners in gold, lacquered with the same cream tones in the background, they are enriched by a gilded phytomorphic bas-relief that echoes the decoration of the under-seat band. All the gilded elements are in Mecca. The gilding of wood in Mecca is a type of gilding performed on silver leaf so that it takes on the appearance and preciousness of gold leaf. Mecca is a varnish with an ancient recipe that was jealously guarded in workshops. It involves the use of sandarac gum and gutta gum in alcohol, dragon's blood and other ingredients which, in a mixture together, contribute to the different chromatic elements of Mecca. Elegant and refined, these benches can be placed in different environments, such as entrances and corridors, lounges and rooms, either against the walls or in the center of the rooms, next to antique or modern furnishings. Please note that the benches are stable thanks to a wooden reinforcement intervention carried out in the 20th century.
Period: Second half of the 18th century
